Maltese Drivers Dominate Opening Round at Racalmuto

Under the blazing Sicilian sun, the 2024 Sicily Time Attack Championship revved into gear last weekend at the iconic Autodromo Valle dei Templi, Racalmuto. Drawing in a formidable field of over 80 competitors, this year’s championship promised action from start to finish. With 24 cars making the journey from Malta, ranging from Mini’s and Fiat 500s to a good presence of Subaru Imprezas and Nissan GTRs, the stage was set for an electrifying showdown.

Saturday’s free practice sessions provided the perfect opportunity for both seasoned veterans and fresh faces to acquaint themselves with the challenging 2.5km circuit nestled amidst the scenic Valley of the Temples. Since its establishment in 2005, the Racalmuto circuit has emerged as a mecca for motorsport enthusiasts, hosting a myriad of events every weekend under the stewardship of its passionate managing director, Dr. Michelangelo Romano.

With each round comprising a minimum of four timed sessions lasting 15 minutes each, competitors were treated to an additional round, ensuring ample track time for all. As the day unfolded, it was Maltese drivers who stole the spotlight, with Nicky Xerxen blazing a trail in his Mitsubishi EVO with a blistering time of 1:05.253. Mark Borg and Daniel Montebello followed suit, showcasing their prowess in a Ferrari 430 and Nissan GTR respectively, with all three drivers notching personal best laps.

In the class battles, Luke Schembri’s Honda Civic emerged victorious, alongside Robert Muscat’s Subaru Impreza, Johann Meli’s Lotus Elise, Darryl Sciberras’ turbocharged Honda Civic, Anatole Vella Gera’s Fiat 595 Abarth, and Dylan Debono’s Ford Fiesta. Mark Borg added to the Maltese triumph by clinching a class win in the historic category aboard his elegant Alfa Sprint 2000.

As anticipation mounts for the next round slated for March 23rd and 24th, the influx of 33 drivers from Malta underscores the growing allure of the championship. Stay tuned for all the latest updates and highlights by following us on social media.
