Nicolas Taylor Shines in Debut Season with PMA Motorsport

The 2024 TCR Italy Championship season kicked off in early May at the Misano World Circuit, featuring nearly 20 teams. Among them, PMA Motorsport is fielding two Audi race cars for the full season of Italian Touring Car racing.

One of PMA Motorsport’s drivers is the 18-year-old Canadian living in the beautiful sunny island, Malta, Nicolas Taylor. Taylor, who has a brief but impressive karting background, won the 2023 Italian National Karting Championship in the Shifter category. Now, he’s making a significant leap into touring car racing, aiming to propel PMA Motorsport to the forefront of the Italian TCR Championship.

Matteo Ansaloni, the sporting director for PMA Motorsport, expressed enthusiasm about Taylor joining the team: “We are very grateful to work with Nic this season. We met him in October 2023 in Cremona when he got into a race car for the first time. A few months later we planned to do the TCR Italian Championship in the best way possible with him.” Taylor himself is optimistic about his new role, stating, “The team has been great, really professional, and they support me so much, which makes me feel comfortable to challenge these big races. I come from karts so this is a great leap forward. I am learning a lot of new racing techniques working closely with the guys, and I do really like the drivability of the Audi.” In his debut weekend, Taylor showed his true talent by securing a front-row start during his first-ever qualifying session. This achievement set a promising tone for the rookie driver and the entire team. Despite an undetected mechanical issue that hindered his performance in the races, Taylor managed impressive P1 and P2 finishes in the Rookie Cup (P6 and P13 overall).

The second round took place at the historic Autodromo di Pergusa in Sicily. With no on-track preparation aside from extensive training on his WPR custom simulator, Taylor and PMA Motorsport faced a challenging task. Their hard work paid off as Taylor once again secured a front-row start. The subsequent races were intense and eventful. Taylor achieved P2 overall, P1 rookie, and P1 under-25 in Race 1. In Race 2, after starting P7 due to an inverted grid, he delivered a stellar performance, recovering from P13 to finish P4 and clinching the rookie win once more, along with a P2 in the Under-25 Cup.

Reflecting on these early successes, Ansaloni commented, “We worked very hard during the winter test to be competitive from the first round and I feel we did it right; we are currently second in the overall championship standings and leading the Rookie Cup after Pergusa. Nic is a smart guy with a lot of potential and the right behaviour to eventually become a professional race car driver. It’s a pleasure to work with him and be alongside him on this exciting journey.” Taylor also leads the field in overall qualifying points, underscoring his strong start to the season.

The next challenge for Taylor and PMA Motorsport is set for Mugello from July 11-14. With his impressive debut and growing experience, Taylor is poised to continue making waves in the TCR Italy Championship and even further in the future.
